NESC Superintendent: Entrance safety renovations on schedule

The construction projects at Northeast School Corp.’s facilities continue.

The upgrades will eventually funnel visitors straight from entrances and vestibules into the main office for each school.

“We kinda are on schedule still,” NESC Superintendent Mark Barker told the Board of Trustees during its monthly meeting Monday night. “If you get a chance to stop by (North Central) High School, you’ll see the office has been gutted, (the secretary’s) desk is in, the door fronts are in and the doors have been moved … We’re just kinda moving along.”

This is a measure meant to increase safety by removing issues of visitors having access to the school’s hallways before ending up in the main office.

The next school, Northeast North Elementary in Farmersburg, started work on Tuesday.

In other business:

• The trustees approved the 2020-2021 school calendar.

This academic year still includes a full week of vacation during Fall Break (Oct. 12 to 16, 2020); three days at Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 to 27, 2020); an early Christmas Break (Dec. 21, 2020 to Jan. 1, 2021).

Spring break is scheduled for March 22 to 26, 2021.

Classes will begin on Aug. 11, 2020, and end on May 26, 2021.

• The corporation will be holding athletic physicals starting April 4, with Northeast East Elementary in Hymera at 9 a.m., followed by Northeast Middle School in Shelburn and NENE.

Physicals will be held at 9 a.m., April 9 at NCHS for high school students.

• The trustees also agreed to keep March 22 — the Friday prior to the start of spring break — as a normal vacation day instead of using it as a make-up day for missing class on Jan. 31.

Instead, the corporation will make up for that day’s cancellation on April 19, which will also serve as it’s second eLearning day.
