A pipe bomb is being suspected as what damaged a contractor’s bulldozer near Hoosier Energy’s Merom Generating Station sometime Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

Around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Jerry Mize was called to the intersection of CRs 300S and 550W, where he found the damaged bulldozer lying on its side in a ditch.

Mize said the damage was localized in the bulldozer’s cab.

“It looks like they threw a pipe bomb in the cab...,” he said.

Mize said the bulldozer, as well as a back-hoe that had been moved from its original position, were the property of a contractor laying pipe in the area.

The lieutenant said he was unsure of the extra extent of the damage, but noted “there was glass breakage and damage done to the interior of the cab.” He added that a few other items were stolen from another of the same contractor’s work sites.

There are no suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the SCSD at 268-4308.
