Arrows top North Central to earn weekend split; T-birds drop two to remain winless

After letting a double-figure lead slip away at Marshall, Illinois on Friday night, Sullivan bounced back with a 78-28 victory over host North Central in local high school boys basketball action over the weekend.
The Golden Arrows (11-9) scored 28 points in the opening quarter as they took a 22-point lead and cruised to the 50-point victory.
Ty Drake led the winners with 19 points. Shane Garner tossed in 12 points while Evan Conner and Trevor Magill each scored 10 for Sullivan.
North Central (0-20) was led by Ty Thompson. The sophomore guard made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
Chase Wiseley scored nine points and Kenny Jones added five.
Sullivan trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half at Marshall, but rallied to take a 29-27 lead at the half.
After Jesse Burdick of Marshall tied the score at 29-all on his only basket, Sullivan put together a 13-3 run to take a double-digit lead.
Trey Powell got inside for a basket, Conner hit back-to-back 3-pointers, Magill added another trey and Mason Dean scored inside as the Sullivan advantage reached 42-32 with two minutes and 42 seconds to play in the third quarter.
The Golden Arrows took a 44-37 advantage to the fourth period and still led 45-37 after a free throw by Magill.
Marshall answered by scoring 10 of the next 12 points, capped off by a 3-pointer from Brock Finkbiner, tying the score at 47-all with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.
Marshall then outscored Sullivan 18-11 to the finish line to win for the 20th time in 24 games. They had a 28-14 advantage in the fourth quarter.
Finkbiner had three treys as he tallied a game-high 19 points. Derrick Sollers also made three triples as he finished with 16 points, matching the output of Josiah Wallace.
Wade Tharp made four 3-pointers to account for his 12 points. Marshall shot 50 percent overall (22 of 44) and from 3-point range (10-for-20).
 Marshall also connected on 11 of 13 free throws as they outscored Sullivan by six points at the foul line.
Drake made half of his 12 shots, including three treys, as he led the Golden Arrows with 16 points. Conner collected 12 points and Magill added 11.
Dean grabbed seven rebounds and Burdick had 10 as Marshall had a slight edge — 23-21.
Marshall scored in the final seconds to win the JV game 40-39, handing Sullivan just its second loss of the season. The Golden Arrows dominated North Central in the junior varsity tilt on Saturday.
On Friday night at Clay City, the host Eels snapped a six-game losing streak as they defeated North Central 60-33. The Eels, who scored 18 of the first 20 points, improved to 7-13 after winning its first Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference game in seven tries.
North Central slipped to 0-6 in the SWIAC.  
The Thunderbirds were limited to just two field goals in the first half and made just 5 of 23 shots through three quarters.
For the game, they shot 10 of 34 (29 percent). North Central connected on 11 of 16 free throws.
Wiseley made 4 of 7 field goals and tallied 11 points for the T-birds. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Jaiden Lundy added six points.
Corbin Crosby paced Clay City, who now has beaten North Central eight straight times, with 14 points.
Dilan Farris had 11 points and Ethan Rogers added nine.
Nathan Farmer grabbed nine rebounds.
Before the game, Clay City coach Vance Edmondson was presented with the game ball from his 100th win, which came on Jan. 7 against Vincennes Rivet at the Greene County Invitational.
Clay City won the JV game 70-28.
North Central will play its final SWIAC game at Linton on Friday.
Sullivan will host Bloomfield on Tuesday and then play at Robinson, Illinois on Friday.
