TERRE HAUTE — Sullivan and North Central both competed at the Terre Haute North boys track and field sectional at Carl S. Riddle Stadium on Thursday.
North Central only managed to score one point as their 3,200 meter relay team finished eighth.
Dalton Jordan, Keaton Tubbs, Brett Wanninger and Damien Lisman teamed up to run the event in 10 minutes and 28.27 seconds.
For Sullivan, junior Dakota Caton qualified for the regional in two events while senior Eric Tomey will be making a second consecutive appearance at next week’s regional.
The top three finishers in each event advance out of the sectional. Sullivan finished fifth with 59 points.
Caton was timed at 11.24 in the 100 finals. He was nipped by defending regional champion Ethan Roach of West Vigo, who won with a time of 11.20.
“There was only .04 seconds between Roach and Dakota,” said Moore. “They were very close and something we will work on next week.”
In the 200, Roach won with a time of 22.85.
Caton was second at 23.10 and Tomey ran third at 23.28.
“It is great to have Dakota and Eric going to the regional in three events combined,” said Moore. “The competition here is very good and the difference between winning and losing is very small.
“It is good to have another week to get ready for a very tough regional. Hopefully we will have both of them at the state in a couple of weeks.”
Moore said the biggest disappointment  of the night was the 400 relay team finishing fifth.
“On relay teams, it usually comes down to handoffs,” said Moore. “West Vigo won it and we had beaten them twice this year.
“Eric got us off to a good start. Dakota ran a great anchor leg, but had too much ground to make up. They had a great season.”
Competition at the Bloomington North Regional is set for 6 p.m. May 25. The top three finishers in each event or those who achieve the state standard in each event will advance to the state finals at Indiana University in June.
