North Central comes up short at Northview
BRAZIL — The Northview Knights got an emotional win in a hard fought battle against a very young, talented North Central squad on Monday night.
The Knights got two key free throws from Makenzie Barger with 13.8 seconds left and two more from Jenny Lundy with 1.5 seconds remaining to seal a 62-59 victory.
Olivia Lundy gave the Thunderbirds nightmares in the post with a 32-point, 16-rebound effort and Jenny Lundy added 19 points and 11 boards.
“Everybody played their hearts out tonight. We were a little out of gas at that speed. Olivia (Lundy) played a great game, a dominant game that we needed her to have as did Jenny (Lundy),” Northview coach Zack Keyes said.
Facing a T-Birds squad that starts three freshman guards that like to play the game at hyper speed, the Knights looked in the post to do much of their scoring damage.
“It went down to the wire. It was a great game,” said North Central coach Joey Davidson. “The girls played hard.
“The Lundy girls are a force. I am proud of my girls.”
However, Northview needed a superior effort from point guard Addy Thompson, who returned after missing two games with an injury. The junior guard had her hands full with the quick defense provided by Averi Davidson and Courtney Williams. While Thompson did not score in the match-up, Keyes was quick to point out her value.
The Knights were able to take a one-point advantage into halftime despite Jenny Lundy sitting the final 5:33 of the second quarter after picking up her second foul.
Three-pointers by North Central senior Rachel Shroyer and Williams got the T-Birds within 36-34, but Haley Richey scored in transition for the Knights. Jenny Lundy followed with a bank shot to halt the T-Birds run briefly, but North Central finished the quarter on a 8-2 run to tie the game at 42-all after three.
Then, Olivia Lundy took a pair of feeds from Thompson to score back-to-back buckets for a 49-42 lead.
Williams hit two free throws and added a drive to get her team within 51-48.
North Central clawed within one point several times over the final three minutes. A pair of free throws from Williams, who had a team-high 22 points, got the T-Birds within 56-55 with 1:18 remaining. After Jenny Lundy answered for the Knights, Williams scored on a drive to get her team within 58-57.
North Central chose to foul Barger with 13.8 seconds on the clock and the sophomore stepped to the line to hit both shots for an important three-point lead.
North Central had a shot to tie the game as Davidson was fouled on a three-point attempt with four seconds left. The freshman hit the first two, but the final attempt rimmed out as Jenny Lundy snagged the rebound and was fouled. The junior hit both to seal the victory with 1.5 seconds on the clock.
“Coach Davidson does a great job. They are playing at a rapid pace right now. We really tried to slow it down as much as we could,” Keyes admitted. “I think we did a pretty good job of it. We got buckets when we had to get buckets late in the fourth quarter. Jenny (Lundy) had a great job there late and Barger hit those free throws.”
The Knights’ junior varsity squad won 65-18. North Central (4-3) will host North Knox on Monday.
