For the second time this season, North Central beat Sullivan.
The two teams tangled on Dec. 23 at Vincennes Lincoln with North Central winning 63-49.
On Tuesday at Sullivan, the Ladybirds outscored the host Lady Arrows 22-7 at the foul line in a 69-60 victory.
North Central improved to 10-7 while Sullivan slipped to 5-13.
“The girls really worked hard on the defensive end,” said North Central coach Joey Davidson. “This was the first game that we started in man-to-man and stayed in it the whole game.
“The girls fought hard and they had to against Sullivan. They play hard and they are physical. You have to work for everything against them.”
Sullivan tried to overcome the disparity at the free throw stripe with more shots from the field. The Lady Arrows, who never led but trailed just 9-7 after the opening quarter and 30-22 at the half, made 24 of 86 shots, 28 percent.
“We had so many good looks at the basket, but just couldn’t get anything to fall,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “After a poor first quarter on the boards, we did a good job of rebounding in the final three quarters.
“We had numerous second and third opportunities, but couldn’t find the bottom of the net.”
North Central, who is still without starting guard Courtney Williams, had three girls carry the load offensively.
Senior Rachel Shroyer was 3-for-3 from 3-point range, finishing with a game-high 23 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.
She scored 11 in the first half, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key to push North Central’s lead to 12-7.
A minute later, she swished another trey from the wing, making it 17-9.
“Shroyer did a really good job for them,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “A couple of times we did not get our hands up on her and she made open threes, like she is capable of doing.”
North Central freshman Averi Davidson ended up with 19 points, including making 15 of 23 foul shots. She also had four assists and five rebounds.
Jocelyn Cox added 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals.
“Rachel really came up big for us with another double-double,” said Davidson. “Averi got to the foul line a lot, but needs to make more of them.
“Jocelyn also had a very good game.”
Davidson said the game ball was awarded to Emma Baker, who hounded Sullivan’s leading scorer into a 2-for-11 shooting night with both baskets coming in the final three minutes.
“Emma is so strong and physical,” said Davidson. “We played a box-and one on Holeman, who is a very, very good player.
“They also played box-and-one on Averi with (Sydney) Akers.”
Asia Povlin made 9 of 16 shots and led Sullivan with 20 points.
“It was good to see Asia make some shots in the paint, and a couple of threes as well,” said Meeks.
Akers chipped in with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Kathleen Ming had nine rebounds and six points.
Sullivan won the junior varsity game 63-25.
The Lady Arrows are scheduled to play a varsity-only game at 6 p.m. Friday at West Vigo.
North Central is scheduled to host White River Valley at 1 p.m. Saturday.
