Sullivan pulls away from WRV
The Sullivan boys basketball team cruised to an 84-44 victory over visiting White River Valley on Saturday night.
Sullivan improved to 10-4 while the Wolverines dropped to 5-7.
Ike Chastain scored the first two baskets of the game as Sullivan never trailed. He scored eight points in the first quarter, six in the second and third and two in the fourth as he finished with a game-high 22 points.
“We haven’t played anybody that can guard Ike,” Sullivan coach Jeff Moore told the media. “The only person that has stopped Ike is Ike.
“He came into this game shooting 62 percent, 66 percent in conference games. He is a big part of this team. He is intimidating, strong and can finish around the basket.”
Shane Garner buried five 3-pointers as he tallied 16 points, including back-to-back treys as the Golden Arrows led 15-4 in the opening quarter.
“When we took him out, I told Shane I wanted to save some of those for next Friday,” said Moore.
Kevin Figg scored the final five points of the first quarter as the Golden Arrows led 27-14 after the opening eight minutes.
Figg finished with 15 points for Sullivan, who led 50-26 at intermission and 68-35 after three quarters.
Jackson Shake scored 11 points as four Golden Arrows reached double figures.
Sam Steimel scored all nine of his points in the first half and Ty Drake scored seven, all in the final two quarters.
Jake Steele and Ben Pirtle each scored two points while Aaron Drake and Kaleb Thrasher also played.
“We jumped out early and then took the pressure off,” said Moore. “We were able to work on our halfcourt man-to-man defense tonight.”
Sullivan won the JV game 60-43.
The Golden Arrows will host the Western Indiana Conference championship game at 6 p.m. Friday against a yet to be determined opponent.
