BICKNELL — The boys and girls track and field teams competed at the Warrior Invitational at North Knox High School on Friday night.
The Sullivan boys finished in sixth place with 53 points. North Central was ninth with 29 points.
Sullivan was fifth with 69 points in the girls meet while North Central took ninth (17 points).
North Central junior Emma Baker was fifth and sixth in the two hurdles races.
Shelby Hall won both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles for Sullivan.
“She was against some very talented girls that pushed her,” said Sullivan girls coach Jackie Ridge. “Our 1,600 relay (Shelby Hall, Abbie Hall, Madi Followell and Whitnee Newby) placed second with a 40-second PR, that kind of PR in the 1,600 relay is unheard of. It helped to have Whitnee Newby back in our 400 relay and 1,600 relay. She couldn’t participate in the open events but we hope to have her back to full participation next week.”
The coach added that Followell was third with a career best four feet and 10 inches in the high jump.
“Sydney (Akers) and Kylie (Wagaman) were 3-4 in the discus as both threw a PR,” said Ridge. “Sydney had a PR by five feet and also had a PR in the pole vault (8-0) and long jump (12-9 1/2).
“Abbie Hall also had a PR in the 400, Ridge Kennedy had a PR in the long jump. We had so many outstanding performances and it’s very encouraging to the girls. For having injuries and low numbers, I felt every girl that competed stepped up with impressive performances. It was very good competition and the girls were able to compete.”
In the boys competition, Sullivan’s Dakota Caton won the 100 and 200 with North Central’s Dawson Basinger running second in the 100 and fourth in the 200.
Greg Bays of North Central was seventh in the long jump and teammate Luke Passmore was fifth in the discus.
Sullivan senior Wes Bedwell won the pole vault at 7-6 and Cole Migliorini was sixth.
On Thursday, the North Central boys scored 24 points in a triangular meet with host Clay City and West Vigo.
The girls also placed third with 19.5 points.
“We saw many PR’s at Clay City, despite the windy conditions,” said North Central boys and girls coach Jamie Case-Huff. The discus duo of Luke Passmore and Malachi England-Elrod took 1-2  at the meet, both posting personal records of 108-8 and 104-4 respectfully. Both athletes threw exceptionally well, and their hard work continues to pay off.”
She said that senior Ashlie Bryant was second in the long jump with a PR and that Bays was third with an 18-8 in the long jump.
She added that Elijah Cliver and Keaton Tubbs went 3-4 in the high jump
According to the coach, Darren Suits continues to slice away at the time in the 110 and 300 hurdles.
“Fellow freshman Zack Weir shaved another 8 seconds off his time in the 3,200 meter run,” she said. “Now that we finally have a couple of meets under our belts, the underclassmen are settling in and understanding better exactly where they need to be to put some points on the board.”
