Sullivan rallies to nip North Central
In the regular-season finale for both baseball teams, host Sullivan scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge North Central 5-4 on Monday at Sportland Field.
The Golden Arrows won for the 22nd time in 28 games.
North Central slipped to 8-10.
Facing North Central sophomore Cody Curtis in relief, Eli Steimel’s single to right field drove in his brother Sam Steimel.
Chris Taylor singled and went to second when Sam Steimel was hit by a pitch.
Jack Conner reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out.
Karter Vernleson then was hit by a pitch, driving in Taylor to tie the game at 4-all.
Sam Steimel hit a solo home run in the fourth for the Golden Arrows.
Kaleb Thrasher had a run-scoring double and Cam Walters also had a hit and scored a run for the Arrows, who ended up with seven hits and three errors.
Braedon Nichols ended up as the winning pitch while Curtis suffered the loss. Nichols helped himself with an RBI.
For North Central, Isaac Bonacorsi had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one run.
Dakota Ellinger had a hit and an RBI and Simon Tierney had a hit and a run. Curtis scored a run and Blake Chatman had an RBI for North Central, who finished with five hits and one error.
Both teams will begin tournament play on Wednesday. The Arrows will face Edgewood at 5:30 p.m. at the Class 3A Owen Valley Sectional 28.
The Thunderbirds will play White River Valley in the second game at the Class A Shakamak Sectional 57. Game time is approximately 7:30 p.m.
