For the first time in 14 years, Sullivan High School will have a baseball player at the Indiana North-South All-Star Series.
Sam Steimel, who will be playing this fall at the University of Evansville, will be a middle infielder on the South All-Stars in the 45th annual series, which will take place this weekend at Four Winds Field, home of the South Bend Cubs.
“It always has been one of my goals to be an Indiana All-Star,” said Steimel, who helped the Golden Arrows win a sectional in 2015 and back-to-back Western Indiana Conference championships in 2017-18. “I am very honored to be selected.”
Steimel is the 10th Sullivan baseball player, along with three coaches, to be an Indiana All-Star. Korey Grow was the last in 2004.
Steimel, the son of Tony and Alison Steimel, said he was hoping to make the team as a pitcher, but an elbow injury limited the right-hander to just four appearances on the mound (4-0 with a 1.50 ERA).
“It just did not work out that way,” said Steimel, batted .469 as a senior with 42 runs, 38 hits, 29 doubles, two triples, four home runs and school records 37 walks drawn in a season and 94 in his career. “But I am still grateful to have a way to finish my high school career as an All-Star.”
The festivities will begin today as players from both teams will check in and meet with the coaches, go over rules, be issued All-Star uniforms, have team and individual pictures taken before practicing.
Today’s events will conclude with a banquet for players and their parents at the South Bend Century Center.
On Saturday, the first three nine-inning games will begin at noon.
Game two on Saturday will start approximately 45 minutes after the completion of game one.
On Sunday, there will be a wooden bat game. The  All-Stars will be wearing their high school uniforms.
“It is hard to believe that my high school career will be over on Sunday,” said Steimel, a first-team Class 3A All-State selection. “It really went by really fast.
“It will be great to put on that Sullivan uniform one more time. It has been a privilege to wear it the last four years.”
