Fall bulletin and Fall Sports Preview signals start of season
You know its time for fall when the Indiana High School Athletic Association issues its annual Fall Bulletin.
And also there is the 12-page 2018 Fall Sports Preview, featuring all 14 teams from Sullivan County. It is today’s B section of the Sullivan Daily Times.
There are 88 pages to the IHSAA’s fall bulletin as it informs the media, fans, players and coaches about official postseason rules and regulations, dates and sectional assignments.
There is virtually no changes in boys and girls cross country.
The sectional, regional, semi-state and state finals will be on consecutive Saturdays including Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27. The girls will run first at all four levels with a start time of 10:30 a.m., with the exception of the state finals, which will begin at 1 p.m. with the boys to follow approximately 1:45.
It will be the 38th state tournament for girls and 73rd for boys cross country.
For Sullivan and North Central, Terre Haute North will be host for the sectional and state with the course at LaVern Gibson being the site for both. Bedford North Lawrence will be hosting the regional and Brown County the semi-state.
The top five teams and top 10 runners from non-advancing teams qualify for the regional and then the semi-state. At the semi-state, the top six teams and top 10 runners from non-qualifying teams advance to state.
Can we please get into the 21st century and come up with a computer program that can show the top 10 outside of qualifying teams? We have the technology to show the results, but not enough tech geeks at the IHSAA to come up with a program to break it down by individual runners trying to qualify. It is downright dumb to force coaches and fans to try and count and figure out those individuals who advance, often miscounting and overlooking runners who qualify or vice versa.
Admission is $5 at the first three levels of cross country with $10 to get in at the state finals.
The 46th annual football state tournament series will feature three rounds of the sectionals on Oct. 19 and 26 and Nov. 2.
The regionals will be on Nov. 9 and semi-states are set for Nov. 16.
Class A state championship games at Lucas Oil Stadium are the two days after Thanksgiving. The Class A game is set for noon on Saturday, Nov. 24. The 3A title contest is set for 3:30 p.m. the same day.
Prices are $6, $8 and $10 for the first three rounds of the tournament and $15 for a general admission seat at the state finals, good for just one day.
Sullivan will again be in Sectional 30 featuring Brown County, Danville, Greencastle, Monrovia, South Vermillion, Tri-West and West Vigo.
As SHS coach Blaine Powell said Danville went to the semi-state last year and has a quality quarterback transferring in from Plainfield for the No 6 Warriors.
In Class A Sectional 48, state-finalist Eastern Greene, North Central, North Daviess, Rock Creek Academy, Springs Valley, Tecumseh and West Washington will be in the hunt.
On paper, North Central, ranked No. 3, would be the early favorite.
Girls golf will be the first up for tournament competition on Sept. 15 at the Country Club of Old Vincennes. The IHSAA event will be hosted against by Vincennes Lincoln. For years, it was at that course, but was hosted by North Daviess, which made little sense.
Barr-Reeve, Linton-Stockton, North Daviess, North Knox, Pike Central, Princeton Community, South Knox, Lincoln, Vincennes Rivet and Washington join Sullivan in the 12-team golf field.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the regional on Sept. 22 at Country Oaks Golf Club in Montgomery.
Edgewood will host the Class 2A girls soccer sectional, which is a six-team affair that includes the host Mustangs, Brown County, Northview, Owen Valley, Sullivan and West Vigo.
There will be matches on Oct. 2, 4 and the championship contest will be at at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.
The boys will play on Oct. 1, 3 and the title match is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 6.
Greencastle will be the host for the Class 2A boys soccer sectional. Northview, Owen Valley, South Vermillion, Sullivan and West Vigo join the Tiger Cubs.
Jasper will host the girls regional and the boys regional will take place at Heritage Hills.
The draw for both the boys and girls soccer sectionals will be on Sept. 23.
The boys tennis sectional will shift from Vincennes Lincoln to Terre Haute South for Sullivan. Terre Haute North and West Vigo also will compete, starting on Sept. 26.
The 47th annual volleyball state tournament will begin on Oct. 11. At the Class A Clay City Sectional 57 including the hosts, there will be Eminence, Bloomfield, Shakamak, White River Valley and North Central making up the six-team field.
In Class 3A Sectional 31, Pike Central will be the hosts for Vincennes Lincoln, Princeton, Washington and Sullivan, who won in 2017 at home.
Semifinals and championship sectional matches will be on Oct. 13.
The regionals will be on Oct. 20 at Morristown for Class A and Corydon Central for Class 3A.
Oct. 27 will be the date for the semi-states with the state finals at Worthen Arena on the campus of Ball State on Nov. 3.
Best of luck to all players, coaches, managers, fans, parents, event workers and administrators.
