BEDFORD — There were nine runners representing Sullivan County at the Bedford North Lawrence boys and girls cross country regional on Saturday.
Sullivan sophomore Dossan Lamb covered the 3.1 mile distance in 17 minutes and 27 seconds.
He finished 31st overall, but was among the top 10 individuals not among qualifying teams and earned a spot in Saturday’s Brown County Semi-state at Eagle Park.
The lone girl to run was Sullivan freshman Josie Gettinger, who finished 88th with a time of 26:41.
“Josie ran hard. She ran pretty consistently to where she has been,” said Sullivan coach Samantha Unger. “She didn’t like not having her teammates along side her but was very excited that she was able to make it to the next level.
“Maddy (Deckard) joined us for the trip to give Josie some support and it helped her get warmed up and ready. Josie is already talking about what she needs to do this winter to continue working on her running around playing basketball. She’s a hard worker and I am pleased with her effort this season and look forward to what next year brings for the ladies.”
Sophomore Zack Weir of North Central covered the distance in 17:55, good for 46th place.
“Zack had his best race so far,” said North Central coach Jeff Ransford. “He ran a new personal best and finally broke 18 minutes.  He was able to beat a lot of kids that had beaten him at sectional and conference.
“And he was really only about 15-20 seconds from advancing to semi-state. It was a great way to end the season and this gives him a lot of confidence for next year.”
Lamb led the Sullivan boys, who finished 10th with a team score of 236.
“Dossan put in a lot of miles this summer and worked hard all season with some ups and downs along the way,” said Unger. “However, here at the end of the season he has been looking pretty strong. He went after it today with a slow start but got the ground made up quickly and finished. I believe, the sixth individual to continue on to the semi-state.
“Matt DuPre in 2003 was our last Sullivan runner to make it to semi-state — a 15 year gap. And now a sophomore has added himself to the list of some strong Sullivan athletes.”
Also finishing for Sullivan included Riley Smith, Will King, Preston Anthony, Grant Alexander, Cole Migliorini and Walker Brocksmith.
“The boys all ran really hard as a team. We knew it was going to be challenging to compete as a team, but as individuals they represented well,” said Unger. “Preston got wiped out early by the pack so he had to fight to get back up where he wanted. It wasn’t the race he wanted but he’s not hurt so that’s a blessing. He never gave up and that’s all I can ask for. Along with Dossan, Will and Grant all ran personal best times. It was definitely the time to be doing it.
“Will looked strong today as he was racing well. Grant still wasn’t happy with his race but he was looking much better today. Cole and Walker ran solid races as we will definitely miss Cole, our only senior. I wish him the best as he continues on his senior year and whatever his future brings him.”
She added that Smith ran 20 seconds better than last year at the regional, but it was’t quite enough to get him to the next level.
“He’s got one more chance and we’ve got to make it happen,” said Unger. “I told the boys to give their best effort no matter what, no matter where they ended up and not to give up on themselves, the team or the school.
“As long as they gave their best, we couldn’t be disappointed. I feel they pretty much like they gave their best,   and I can’t be disappointed. The boys had a great season.”
The girls race will be first at Brown County on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The boys race will follow at approximately 12:15 p.m.
