Sullivan High School wrestling coach Roy Monroe expected his Golden Arrows to be in a tight match with visiting North Knox on Tuesday.
The Golden Arrows rallied from an 18-0 deficit to defeat the Warriors 42-36.
“I had it worked out to where it was 42-42,” said Monroe. “I didn’t know for sure how the forfeits were going to play out.
“But in the end, it was good to get the win. We have such a young team and it was good for their confidence.”
After North Knox started with a forfeit and two pins, David Morrison won by fall at 220 pounds.
It was the first of seven consecutive pins by the home team as Kenton Williams, Dossan Lamb, Jakobe Jackson, Gavin Jenkins, Kyle Maxey and Josh Scaggs followed up Morrison. Williams is now 4-0 on the season.
“David got a fall and got us going,” said Monroe. “Then Kenton got a win and we’re on our way.”
Lamb pinned Ethan Styles in one minute and 15 seconds, earning a win in his first varsity match.
“We have been working with Dossan on three moves,” said Monroe. “Before the match, I told him three moves, nothing more.
“Dossan went out and focused and did a good job. I was happy to see him get on the mat and get a win.”
Monroe added that Jenkins and Jackson did exactly what he expected.
“Maxey was able to continue the wins,” said Monroe. “He kept us going.
“Josh pretty much iced things with his fall.”
At 138, Levi Street lost by pin.
“Levi was wrestling in just the third match in his life,” said Monroe. “We have so many young kids that are learning what this is all about.
“The biggest thing we got out of this win tonight was motivation. This will motivate us and will make us work even harder.”
The Golden Arrows will compete at the Evansville Memorial Invitational on Saturday.
“To be honest, I am not sure who all the teams will be down there,” said Monroe. “But I know that Evansville Memorial will be more than we can handle.
“But we are going to show up and compete and wrestle as well as we can. We are still focused on the sectional at this point. We want to be peaking when the sectional starts.”
