FARMERSBURG — Sullivan limited North Central to just over 24 percent shooting as the Lady Arrows won the bragging rights of Sullivan County, defeating the host Ladybirds 57-41 in a high school girls basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Lady Arrows improved to 11-7 while North Central slipped to 9-7 with its fifth consecutive loss.
“I thought our man-to-man defense did a good job,” said Sullivan coach Julie Meeks. “We were able to put some pressure on them.
“We did not give them many easy looks.”
North Central was playing its first game since a 78-40 loss on Dec. 22 to Corydon Central at the Vincennes Lincoln Holiday tournament.
“We have no excuses,” said Davidson. “We just got outplayed by a better team.
“Sullivan is really good. They have a chance to make some noise when the tournament starts.”
The Ladybirds misfired on 18 of 22 shots as they fell behind 28-16 at intermission.
For the game, North Central was 14 of 57, a percentage of .245.
“Sullivan did a good job contesting shots,” said Davidson. “They did a good job of rebounding and getting the ball out on the break.
“They ended up getting a lot of layups and easy shots. They were more active and moved the ball well. They were quicker to the ball than we were.”
Sullivan never trailed as Delainey Shorter made three fouls shots to begin the game. North Central got as close as 5-4, but the Lady Arrows used a 8-2 lead to go ahead 13-6 after the opening eight minutes.
Shorter led the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Sister Gracie Shorter had 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Courtney Lueking came off the bench and scored a career-high 14 points on 7 of 9 shooting. She also had eight rebounds as Sullivan had a 46-34 advantage.
“Courtney played great,” said Meeks. “That was the most points a post player has scored for us all year and it was the most she has scored in her brief career.
“She came in and gave us a lift, making shots in the paint. She also did a good job on the boards. I have been looking for that kind of performance from our post players all season.”
Jocelyn Cox led the Ladybirds with 14 points and eight rebounds. Emma Baker had seven points and 10 rebounds.
Averi Davidson was limited to six points on 2 of 18 shooting. Courtney Williams scored 10 points, but missed 13 of 16 shots.
“We did a good job collective on Averi and Williams,” said Meeks. “I was proud of the girls and our effort.”
North Central will play at home against South Vermillion Thursday, starting with the JV game at 6 p.m.
Sullivan’s JV team will play at West Vigo at 6 p.m. Thursday while the Lady Arrows and Lady Vikings will meet in the varsity game at 6 p.m. Friday at Sullivan.
