FARMERSBURG — Sullivan extended its winning streak over North Central to four, but it was anything but easy.
The host Thunderbirds led throughout much of the first three quarters, but eventually fell by a score of 50-41 in a high school boys basketball game on Thursday night.
The Golden Arrows, who have won 10 of the last 11 in the series, improved to 12-7 while the Thunderbirds, who won three straight against SHS from 2006-2008, dropped to 5-12.
“You have to give North Central a lot of credit,” said Sullivan coach Jeff Moore. “Their kids came out and played hard and made it tough on us.”
North Central led 10-6 after the opening quarter and still was ahead 19-16 at intermission.
“I was pleased with the way we played,” said North Central coach Vance Edmondson. “The kids really played hard and followed the game plan.
“Other than giving up too much penetration out of our 3-2 zone, I don’t how you do that, I thought we played well and competed against a good basketball team.”
Sullivan forward Kevin Figg gave everyone an indication of what was to come, after his putback brought the Arrows to with three at the half.
It was his only basket of the first two quarters as he had just three points at intermission.
Figg was 8 of 8 shooting in the second half. He made five baskets in the third quarter and added two foul shots as he outscored the Thunderbirds 12-11 in the third, helping Sullivan take a 31-30 lead despite a quarter-ending 3-point, 30-footer by North Central guard Bryton Suggs.
Figg would finish with 21 points to go with eight rebounds on 9 of 11 shooting.
“I thought we did a good job on Kevin and he still scored 21 points,” said Edmondson. “He is a good player and he really hurt us inside in the second half.”
Suggs scored on a layup and James Roberts’ putback gave North Central a 34-31 lead in the first 71 seconds of the fourth.
Freshman Randy Kelley, who finished with 10 points, hit a running two-pointer and a trey around two foul shots by Jackson Shake, as Sullivan took the lead for good at 38-34 at the 4:35 mark of the fourth.
Ty Thompson led North Central, who made nine of its 18 turnovers in the fourth quarter, with 14 points and Suggs finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Both teams will play on the road tonight as NCHS visits Clay City at 6 p.m. and Sullivan will play at Marshall, Illinois, starting at 6:30 p.m.
