SHELBYVILLE — In its first regional game in school history, Greenwood Christian Academy used a dominant second quarter as the Lady Cougars defeated North Central 80-62 in the semifinals of the Class A Southwestern (Shelbyville) girls basketball regional on Saturday morning.
After using a 8-2 spurt to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter, Greenwood Christian made 7 of 8 shots to begin the second quarter.
Before the second stanza was over, GCA had made 13 of 17 field goals, including 5 of 6 3-pointers and scored 33 points to take a 48-30 lead at intermission.
Alexis Mead made three 3-pointers in the second quarter, four in the half, to key the outburst.
She finished by hitting 6 of 12 treys, part of a 20-point performance.
“We ran into a buzzsaw,” said North Central coach Joey Davidson. “They got into a groove and couldn’t miss.
“We knew Mead was a shooter and we lost her several times. She made us pay, especially in the second quarter.”
Isabella Reed scored 13 points in the first half, including six in the second quarter.
Reed made 8 of 17 field goals and all five free throws, finishing with 22 points to go with 21 rebounds.
“We could not stop Reed’s penetration,” said Davidson. “She got to the basket for easy looks and she was part of the reason they killed us on the boards.”
North Central forced GCA into seven turnovers and outscored the Lady Cougars 18-13 in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 61-48.
The Ladybirds (16-9) scored the first six points of the fourth quarter. A steal by Jocelyn Cox led to a basket by Averi Davidson, cutting the deficit to 61-54. It was a close as the Ladybirds would get.
“Our pressure caused them some problems in the second half,” said Davidson. “We got as close as seven, but you have to give them credit because they were able to score and keep us at arm’s length.”
Over the next 112 seconds, GCA went on a 9-1 spurt to take a 70-55 lead after a layup by Reed.
Savannah Frye scored 14 points, giving GCA three players in double figures. The Lady Cougars made 32 of 59 shots, 53 percent.
North Central was led by Cox, who scored 22 points on 8 of 17 shooting.
Davidson scored 22 points on 7 of 27 shooting. North Central was 21 of 72, 29 percent. They missed 19 of 21 shots after they cut the lead to seven.
Brinley Stone and Emma Baker each grabbed eight rebounds.
“I am so proud of the girls,” said Davidson. “Although this is not the way we wanted to end our season, we had a great year, winning the school’s first sectional in 17 years.
“We will lose three seniors, Emma, Liz (Waterman) and Gabby (Cano). They will be missed, but we have a good group returning.
“We are looking forward to the future.”
