Sullivan High School freshmen students in Jennifer Jo Smith's Academic English class recently culminated their unit on Edgar Allan Poe with an escape room challenge built around his classic short story "The Masque of the Red Death." Students worked in teams and masks as they completed challenges together such as ciphers, literary elements and symbolism, to name a few. There were seven challenges in all; one challenge to mark each of the colored rooms in Poe's story. The SHS Library Media Center was decorated in a haunted theme with special effect lighting and music to set the mysterious mood. "It was such fun to put together and I am really pleased to see how engaged and excited the students were to beat the clock while learning a lot of important things about this story and author," said Smith, teacher and library media specialist.
