Farmersburg altercation leads to several charges for a Shelburn man

Times staff report

An early Saturday morning altercation leads to several charges filed
against a Shelburn man.

At 5:33 a.m., Farmersburg Town Marshal Cody Strain was called out,
while off duty, by Sullivan County Dispatch in reference to a possible
stabbing in progress at a residence on South Third Street in
Farmersburg.

As Strain approached the residence with his emergency lights
activated, a young female ran to his vehicle with blood on her person.
She was immediately secured in a police vehicle for her safety. It was
at that time a male suspect, later identified as Riley Devon
McConnell, 23, of Shelburn, aggressively approached the female and
Strain. The female identified him as the aggressor. The male suspect
was given commands at gunpoint, with which he eventually complied. He
was detained at
that time, shortly followed by a brief struggle with Strain and an
assisting officer.

During the investigation, it is alleged that the male suspect had
forcibly entered a residence with intent to harm a female and male
located inside. A fight between the suspect and a male inside the
residence ensued resulting in a knife being pulled in an attempt to
stab another individual as well as the female. The male and female
were able to escape and seek cover until law enforcement could arrive.

McConnell was immediately taken into custody and is preliminarily
being charged with: burglary (deadly weapon), Level 2 felony; three
counts of intimidation (deadly weapon), Level 5 felony; battery
(deadly weapon), Level 5 felony; criminal recklessness (deadly
weapon), Level 6 felony; battery, A misdemeanor; criminal mischief, B
misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct, B misdemeanor.

McConnell was remanded at the Sullivan County Jail on $67,000 bond.

Assisting agencies were the Sullivan City Police Department, Sullivan
County Sheriff’s Department, Sullivan County Dispatch, Thunderbird
Fire Protection Territory and Sullivan County Ambulance Transport.
