Southwest High Schools Athletic Hall of Fame deadline for nominations is May 28
The Southwest High Schools Athletic Hall of Fame started back in 1996 and has inducted a couple of hundred athletes and coaches from Sullivan, Merom, Gill Township, Paxton, Graysville, New Lebanon and Carlisle high schools.
Chris Stitzle, chairman of the athletic hall of fame, is hoping to continue to receive input on future inductees.
“We want to keep the community involved in adding nominees to the ballot for the athletic hall of fame,” said Stitzle. “We have received several good ideas from the community which led to nominations over the past couple of years.
“We still have the link on our school website (swest.k12.in.us). People can go and fill out a form online. I think we can continue to get more people involved in the process.”
Stitzle came to SHS in 1986 as an industrial arts teacher and has served as athletic director and principal at the high school and now is the superintendent at Southwest School Corp.
“I have been here over 30 years, but I don’t know everybody,” said Stitzle. “We have people on the committee that go back farther than me, but I know we are missing people that deserve to be in the hall of fame.”
“We just want people in the community to think about former athletes and coaches that deserve recognition.”
Stitzle said the only requirement is that athletes have to been out of school for at least five years.
“We honor both male and female athletes and coaches,” he said. “We also have at least one inductee posthumously.”
The deadline for the class of 2019 is May 28
“I am hoping that the community can help us bring names to the committee that might have been overlooked,” said Stitzle. “The one neat thing about this whole process for me is when student-athletes come back for the ceremony in September and you get to see what they have done since graduating from school.”
