ELLETTSVILLE — For the second time this season, West Vigo defeated Sullivan in a high school softball game.
The Lady Vikings, who beat the Lady Arrows 6-2 on May 7, had hits in every inning but the seventh as West Vigo defeated Sullivan 3-0 in the semifinals of the Class 3A Owen Valley Sectional, which was played at Edgewood on Thursday.
In the first inning, Torie Buchanan and Mary-Paige Mason each singled and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball and Buchanan scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Barnaby as the Lady Vikings (15-11) had all the runs they would need.
But Barnaby was just getting warmed up. Her RBI-double scored Mason as West Vigo went up 2-0 after three innings.
Barnaby then hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the fifth to account for the final run, giving her three RBIs and two hits.
“They just did a better job of putting the bat on the ball and putting it in play,” said Sullivan coach Lela Earley, whose Lady Arrows finished 17-12. “I thought our defense played great and made a lot of plays, but they just had a better day at the plate than we did.”
Junior Rhiana Maples tossed a shutout, limiting Sullivan to three hits. She fanned five and walked two.
Sullivan only had six base runners as Reagan Holeman had a single and double, both to the same spot in right center.
Losing pitcher Kendal Edmondson had the other Sullivan hit.
Sydnee Hester was hit by a pitch and Asia Povlin and Abbey Wardell each walked.
“I was really proud of the girls,” said Earley. “We just couldn’t put any hits together against their pitcher.”
Edmondson allowed three earned runs and 12 hits as she threw seven innings. She struck out one and walked none.
Wardell, Sheyanna Ravellette, Maclynne Steele and Mariah Wills are the four seniors who will be lost to graduation.
“I wish them well. They will be missed,” Earley said of her seniors. “I know they will go on with their lives and do good things.”
