LINTON — The Sullivan High School boys golf team concluded the 2019 season with a sixth-place finish at the Linton Sectional on Monday.
The Golden Arrows shot 361, the same as Clay City, but the Eels placed fifth because SHS did not have a fifth golfer’s score to use as the tiebreaker.
“We were about 20 strokes better than we were last year,” said Sullivan coach Blake Reynolds. “I know the boys were hoping to shoot better scores, but I believe all of them did the best they could do.”
Northview won the team title with a score of 315, edging Terre Haute North by four strokes. Terre Haute South claimed the final spot in Thursday’s Washington Regional at Country Oaks Golf Club by finishing third (335).
“I saw some sectionals where 361 would have won it,” said Reynolds. “This is a slightly above average sectional.”
Gavin Jenkins was low for the Golden Arrows, shooting 86 (44-42). Jaren Woodard shot 87 (45-42) and Wyatt Piel (46-48) and Collier Elliott (48-46) both carded 94.
“We have a young team as all of our top five golfers return,” said Reynolds. “If they continue to put in time in the off season, they are only going to improve.”
Reynolds completed his third and what proved to be his final year at SHS. The band teacher has taken a similar position at Robinson (Illinois) High School.
“These boys have a chance to be really good over the next couple of years,” said Reynolds “It is unfortunate that I am not going to be around to reap the rewards of these young golfers getting better.”
Sullivan Athletic Director Otto Clements said that they are still looking for a replacement for Reynolds.
“We haven’t had anyone apply,” said Clements. “We have extended the opening through the end of the June.”
