GREENCASTLE – Basketball on the road has been unkind to the Sullivan girls basketball team over the course of the last week.

After a pair of double-digit non-conference losses, the Golden Arrows returned to Western Indiana Conference play with a chance to cement their position as conference front runners against South Putnam on Friday.

Klaire Williams’ three with 40 seconds remaining erased what had been an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter but the visitors gave up four chances to the hosts in the final seconds as Bree Miller made the basket that would ultimately get the 2A No. 8 Eagles over the line for a 44-43 win.

Managing fouls would be a concept worn out  for both teams as each side had a starter pick up two early fouls, both affecting play in different ways.

Sullivan junior Delainey Shorter was whistled for her third foul just over 30 seconds into the second period. But the Lady Arrows were in the bonus soon after as multiple South Putnam defenders were picking up fouls trying to keep pace with Gracie Shorter and Brionna Perkinson, who’s three-point play made it a 12-11 game while Gracie hit a free throw and scored on a drive as Sullivan went ahead 14-12.

South Putnam’s Hannah Teipen scored on a drive while Sullivan’s Alexis Grindstaff hit two late free throws as the hosts led 18-17 at the half.

South Putnam took a 33-25 lead into the final quarter and made it a double-digit advantage right away as Lilly Vittetow opened the final quarter with a three.

Sullivan trailed 40-29 with six minutes left before going on a 14-2 run to take the lead on a rare triple by Williams.

Gracie Shorter led the winners with 16 points. Williams finished with 13. Sullivan suffered its first loss in five conference games.
