North Central tops Eastern Greene to place third at Greene County Invitational

North Central captured third place in the Greene County Invitational on Saturday and evened its record at 6-6 with a 63-58 victory over Eastern Greene in a high school boys basketball game.

This avenged a 52-32 loss at Eastern Greene some 32 days earlier.

“This shows how much we have improved,” North Central coach Vance Edmondson said compared to the earlier meeting. “Eastern is a good team with some length and they can shoot it.

“Our game against them earlier might have been our worst performance of the season. But tonight when they got up by eight points (20-12 at the end of the first quarter), we battled back and made shots. We had a good second quarter and took a two-point lead (28-26) at the half.”

Wyatt Ison had a 3-pointer and a two-point from opposite sides of the lane in the second quarter. Also in the period, Tyler Vaughn’s 3-pointer in the final seconds put the NC Thunderbirds ahead at intermission. Vaughn scored 11 of his team-high 20 points before halftime.

“Wyatt came in and hit a three and two to get us going in the second quarter,” said Edmondson. “Vaughn played well at both ends, causing havoc on the defensive with his quickness.”

The third quarter was back-and-forth. Sam Rees hit two free throws with two minutes and 25 seconds to play in the third, giving Eastern Greene a 41-40 advantage. It would turn out to be the last lead that the EG Thunderbirds would have.

Vaughn answered with a 3-pointer 36 seconds later and Peyton Seay, who scored a career-high 13 points, got in the paint for a deuce as North Central led 45-44 after three.

“Peyton continues to get better,” said Edmondson. “That is what we want to continue to do as a team, just get better.”

North Central made 7 of 8 shots in the fourth quarter to hold off EG. DeShawn Clark was limited to nine points, not even half of his average, but the sophomore had seven in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Hadley added 10 for North Central, who shot 25 of 39, 66%. They outrebounded Eastern Greene 27-17 as Clark and Hadley each had seven apiece.

Clark also had six assists.

“I thought we played well in this tournament,” Edmondson said of winning 2 of 3 games at the GCI. “We just have to continue to work hard and get better.”

North Central will be off until Jan. 16 when they play a varsity-only game at Vincennes Rivet. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
