SHS tennis team has record-setting night

Photo by B.J. HARGIS: Sullivan senior Courtney Lueking teamed with Lexie Baker to break the school record for win at No. 2 doubles.

Sullivan only dropped one set as the Lady Arrows cruised past visiting
Greencastle 5-0 in a high school girls tennis match on Friday.
The Lady Arrows improved to 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the Western
Indiana Conference. Greencastle entered the contest undefeated in the
“The girls worked very hard this week to prepare for this match,” said
Sullivan coach Wes Kirk. “I am really proud of their effort.
“This was a great win against a good team.”
It was a record-setting night for the Lady Arrows, who climbed to
within one win of tying the school record of 16 wins, which came in
the 1986 season.
The No. 2 doubles team of Courtney Lueking and Lexie Baker pushed its
record to 14-0, which is the new school record for wins at that
position at SHS. In 2019, Sydney Greggs and Baker won 13 matches.
Annie Smith remained undefeated (14-0) at No. 2 singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Peyton Sisil and Sarah Francis dropped just
three games and Paige Chickadaunce (at No. 2 singles) four in winning
in straight sets.
Hanna Burkhart continues to knock off more experienced players. The
sophomore rallied from a set down to win in three — 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.
“There were so many by-lines tonight,” said Kirk. “We are still
undefeated overall and undefeated in the WIC after handing Greencastle
its first conference loss.
“Courtney and Lexie set a record for wins in a season at two doubles.
Annie is still undefeated at No. 3 singles. Peyton and Sarah just went
out and took care of business. I thought both doubles teams played
great. Hanna showed a lot of toughness and determination to come back
and beat a senior.”
The SHS JV team also won 6-2.
Sullivan will host Terre Haute North on Tuesday, starting at 5 p.m.
